UA Local 188

Training

Local 188 is a combination local: Pipefitting, Plumbing, HVAC and Welding.  Our Apprentices must complete a 5 year program which consists of 1230 hours of instructional training and 8,500 to 10,000 hours of on the job training before they can complete our program and be certified as a Journeymen.  Our Apprentices are OSHA certified and are required to pass an annual drug screen.  We are also associated with the University of Michigan, Helmets to Hard Hats, Bureau of Apprenticeship Training and the Chamber of Commerce.

Our instructors attend Washtenaw College in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a one week instructor training program.  An associates' degree is given after attending for 5 years.  They also attend additional instructional courses throughout the year to keep them abreast of new developments and update their certifications.

  • OSHA, Union Heritage and Tool Safety
  • HVAC and Basic Electricity
  • Blue Print Reading and ISO Drawing
  • Basic Math and Advanced Math
  • Plumbing
  • Layout
  • Beginner Welding
  • Intermediate Welding
  • Advanced Welding: To be certified as a Journeyman welder they must have UA Certs: Tig and Stick
  • Rigging, (EPRI) Electrical Power Research Institute
  • Accelerated Welding Program
  • Medical Gas Training
  • Foreman Certification
  • Steward Training
  • Backflow Certification
  • Tube Bending
